What T-700R4 models will fit a 1982 Vette?

May 7th, 2009

Easy question, easy answer. GotTransmissions.com has the transmission you are looking for if the unit you are contemplating is no good. Don’t forget, you can buy a remanufactured-upgraded T-700 built for your application from GotTransmissions.com.

All V-8 gasoline T-700′s have the same bolt pattern. All Chevy V-8 engines from 1955 up to 2004 have the same pattern. It was the only V-8 pattern General Motors, or Chevrolet used for 58 plus years. This applies to the gasoline engine line exclusively and most of the diesels. The V-6 G.M engines used a different T-700R4 pattern.

The only difference I can think of externally is the four wheel drive unit uses a transfer case bolted to the back of the tranny instead of a tail housing for a drive shaft yoke. Otherwise, the differences are not visible. Meaning that the truck T-700 transmission has more beef inside it and shifts more positive than a Camaro transmission. And a Hi-performance Camaro or a Corvette may have a more aggressive shifting transmission than a stock Camaro or Suburban transmission.

My plan would be to make sure the transmission soft parts and hard parts are in good shape first, than install A TransGo upgrade kit, before it goes in the car. The beauty here is that you can program the transmission to shift nice and smooth or very aggressive as in a Corvette. Or program it for commercial use. I would put an auxiliary transmission cooler and use synthetic ATF in it to protect my investment.

Good luck on your changeover. GotTransmissions.com Blog has more articles on T-700R4 swap overs in the upgrade category.
