Transmissions for sale: Chrysler 45RFE ..

July 14th, 2009

When looking for a transmission for sale, particularly the 45RFE, which is a Chrysler automatic transmission. The name RFE is essentially an acronym for its Rear wheel drive Full Electronic control system.

The 45RFE is an automatic transmission from DaimlerChrysler.

Introduced in the WJ Grand Cherokee in 1999, it is mentionable for having 3 planetary gear sets instead of the two normally used in a 4-speed  automatic overdrive transmissions. This gives it in theory, six speeds, perhaps it would have been the first six-speed transmission ever produced in volume.

The factory decided to program the TCU  to only use five of these ratios. Four are used for upshifts, with a different second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratios are used, Chrysler decided to call it a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission.

The 45RFE is produced at the Indiana Transmission plant in Kokomo, Indiana. It is normally bolted to the 4.7L V-8 Chrysler engine.

The 45RFE later became the 5-speed 545RFE.

In design this is a heavy duty transmission, that with the correct updates becomes practically bulletproof. Essentially the internal components are up to nearly any task. However, the programming  of the valve body from the factory leaves much to be desired.

Valve body programming problems and solenoid pack assembly’s have been the Achilles heal of this transmission. We hear many stories of unhappy people who have experienced multiple problems and many failures with this transmission as it comes out of the factory.

Needless to say a lot of research and development time has been put into upgrading the weak spots, which turns this into a very reliable transmission capable of exceeding expectations. Reprogramming the valve body is the area that receives the most attention in upgrades when a 45RFE is rebuilt.

The issue at hand is how do you know what company that has Chrysler transmissions for sale, which offers the upgraded units. Realistically speaking there is no way to tell from the outside of the transmission. So in essence one has to do the research necessary in order to buy a transmission for sale that has been upgraded during a rebuild. The company’s ethics play a big part here.
