Digging into the finer details of transmissions, it is obvious that there are a lot of choices out there. As far as I’m concerned there is only one way to remanufacture a transmission. We all about educating our consumers about how to choose and buy the most reliable transmissions.

Question: I am the owner of a 1996 Ford Mustang GT. My mother is the owner of a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis, and my Grandfather is the owner of a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis. Within the last five months all three of us had to have our 4.6 liter V8 transmissions rebuilt due to a fault in the design of the Torque Converter which made the transmission lock up on occasion and create a shudder when changing gears.

AAMCO mentioned that they get Ford vechicles day in and day out for this problem and they have records from Ford mentioning this problem.

To me this is a very serious matter that needs to be brought up because no person should have to pay and change a transmission just because of a bad design from Ford. I love Ford cars and I stand behind Ford 100% but if this problem cannot be rectified my feeling of trust in Ford will be lost.

Possibilities: If the torque converter is bad, it should not cause the entire transmission to be rebuilt. If a converter goes bad due to an internal defect, then you just change the converter. If the problem is a control problem in the valve body then you address that too … you do not need to r&r the whole unit unless you have been driving on it a long time and caused internal damage.

Ford probably just did a crate swap and did it under the warranty. Most transmissions go bad because of heat. Do you have a transmission cooler on your vehicles? If not, I strongly recommend one be installed by a professional to survive the heat down in Florida.

Question: My 5-speed Mitsubishi transmission went out with only 96,000 miles on the car. Also, the head gasket and oil sending units were leaking oil very badly. It is important to note that using the factory lubricant, purchased from the dealer is essential. Nothing else works as well. Don’t be talked into some other lubrication. Trust me.

#2. Abuse. Abuse can be from driving it too hard. Like laying patches of rubber on takeoff, hard acceleration all the time, a 16 year old son, or even water in your transmission. Abuse in my opinion is also lack of maintenance!! Basically, your transmission is the forgotten part, until it fails. Another form of abuse is a leak. If you don’t look for leaks, than regular service is crucial, since the transmission fluid level is checked anytime your engine oil is changed. Just make sure you ask them to look for a leak and refill it when the service is performed. If you let the fluid leak out, expect a transmission failure.

Auto manufacturers don’t like to conduct recalls. They are very expensive and don’t exactly do wonders for marketing efforts. Most problems never get to the recall stage; that doesn’t mean they’re not problems, it just means the manufacturer has managed to wriggle out of conducting a full-scale recall. Much more common are “secret” warranties and technical service bulletins. Also, newer vehicles with persistent problems may be covered by the Lemon Law in your state.

Few car owners know that “secret warranties” exist. Automakers are reluctant to make them public for fear it would dampen confidence in their product and increase their legal liability. Most motorists who get compensated for repairs to blown engines, burned-up auto transmissions or paint that has turned chalky white or peeled away, are the ones who read consumer news sites, yell the loudest and refuse to take no for an answer. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!!

The 4-Step Process in Secret Warranties:

1. Service advisories are posted on an automaker’s internal computer network. They offer troubleshooting tips and allow the dealer to bill the manufacturer for the repair. This information is never divulged to the customer.

2. If the defect grows in magnitude into a more involved solution requiring upgraded parts, automakers then draw up a formal technical service bulletin (called a TSB or DSB) and distribute the bulletin to dealers and US and Canada. The service bulletin is only issued after the manufacturer has what it thinks is the solution for the defect. TSBs issued by Chrysler, Ford, and GM will usually spell out clearly which base warranty will cover the repair (emissions warranty, bumper-to-bumper, etc.). Interestingly, Asian and European automakers are vague in their description of their warranty obligations. Honda, for example, uses the term “goodwill” as a euphemism to describe its warranty extensions.

3. As more and more customers hear about TSBs for a common factory-related defect, and find that the base warranty is clearly inadequate to deal with the scope of the problem, pressure on dealers builds. With customers pressing for after-warranty help, the dealers put pressure on the manufacturer. This can lead to a second TSB, sent only to dealers, extending the warranty coverage and leaving to the dealer’s discretion the amount that will be covered or refunded to the customer.

4. In some cases, the aggravation gets too great and the automaker decides to issue a press release followed by an owner notification letter (sent to first owners only, at their last known address) which clearly spells out what all owners will get and which vehicles are involved. A special bulletin or letter is also sent to dealers to ensure they follow the guidelines. Ford calls these Owner Notification Policies, GM calls them Special Policies, and Chrysler calls them Owner Satisfaction Notifications. No matter the euphemism, they are an extension of the original warranty, applied to vehicles that may have been bought new or used.

According to my sources, federal safety officials are investigating hundreds of complaints that 2004-05 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans have defective transmissions that can cause the moving vehicles to stop suddenly.

As many as 205,000 vehicles could be affected, according to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) said today.

Investigators are focusing on the torque converter output shaft, NHTSA said on its Web site. The shaft, in the rear of the transmission, which eventually applies power to the front wheels.

NHTSA reported 654 customer complaints and 2,791 warranty claims related to the vehicles’ sudden inability to move on the road.

Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, Said, “It’s a safety defect and should be recalled,”

The agency’s engineering analysis is to be completed in 12 months, according to NHTSA. (what a joke.)

Apparently Ford Motor Company’s spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Freestar and its Monterey brother debuted in late 2003 and were discontinued after the 2007 model year after sagging sales.

In one complaint to the Center for Auto Safety, a Delaware resident said her 2004 Freestar suddenly stopped three times — twice while on high-speed roadways trying to merge into traffic.

One of the complaints read “While the vehicle was moving, the rpms (revolutions per minute) would ramp up extremely high, but the vehicle would not move forward (felt as if all power, including steering, were gone).

This type of occurrence happens all the time to every manufacturer for every part of a car. And the manufacturers won’t speak about it or return calls. To me that is an admission of guilt. With that in mind, Ford research and development has developed a stronger shaft for replacement, and is in use currently. Why they don’t issue an immediate recall is beyond me. This is a big safety issue.
