As promised, this is the third installation of a three part series on Toyota Prius Transmissions, Inverter, and now we shall talk about the Hybrid battery Pack. The first and second installations are available by following the appropriate text links [below paragraphs]. Getting to the technical details;

I’m not an electrical engineer, although this may be somewhat overcomplicated for many folks, this is what Wiki says about Nickel-metal hydride batteries, which are used in most hybrids; A nickel-metal hydride cell, abbreviated NiMH, is a type of secondary electrochemical cell similar to the nickel-cadmium cell. The NiMH battery uses a hydrogen-absorbing alloy for the negative electrode instead of cadmium. As in NiCd cells, the positive electrode is nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH). A NiMH battery can have two to three times the capacity of an equivalent size nickel-cadmium battery. Compared to the lithium-ion cell, the volumetric energy density is similar but self-discharge is higher.

We will discuss the Inverter and Assist motor directly related to, and part of the transmission. Yesterday we discussed the 2002 to 2004 Toyota Prius transmissions/engine if you want to read about that now. Today we want to talk about a component that can be purchased by itself, or as a complete unit with the transmission. We will refer to it as an inverter.

An inverter is an electrical device that converts direct current [DC] into alternating current [AC]. I’m not an electrical engineer, to put it simply, an inverter converts power by using a maze of capacitors, diodes and electrical parts which change direct current into alternating current. For all practical purposes, the inverter is charged with direct current, which is internally converted to alternating current, then to power a devise that runs off of AC.

Fir instance, campers and motor homes have inverters [which store electrical energy for later use] to operate lights, stoves and other conveniences [when the engine and generator are not running] built into them. Hopefully that gives you a better idea.

Through the regenerative braking system [a complicated system that turns the heat generated from brakes and converts it into electrical power] and regular charging system [alternator] the inverter stays charged, which converts one type of electricity into another form of usable electricity for said vehicle.

This operates the electric assist motors. Doing exactly what they are told via the sensors that communicate with the ECM. It has no sense of the electrical sequencing [in other words, it has no intelligence] and cannot drive the assist motors for propulsion without the computer.

It’s no surprise to me that people are calling for transmissions and the parts that make up the drivetrain for the hybrid automobile named the Toyota Prius. A Hybrid Synergy Drive [HSD] is a transmission that combines a planetary gear-set system that works almost exactly like a Continuously Variable Transmission [CVT] with one conventional gear change. It does not use a torque converter like a conventional automatic transmission. The computer controlled [HSD] transaxle adjusts and blends the amount of power from the [Atkinson] gasoline engine, and the electric motor-generator(s) as needed by the front drive wheels and main rechargeable batteries.

For all practical purposes, the ECCVT transmission [Called Hybrid Synergy Drive] is an electrically operated CVT transmission. CVT transmissions are well suited to Hybrid cars because they are small and they also use very little power to operate. Combined with full computerization, a CVT will provide absolute seamless power, without noticeable gear changes. It’s all part of the system, which includes the inverter and main battery pack.
