A Used Transmission success story…

Recently I was visiting one of my comrades in the automotive repair industry, in his case general engine repairs. He is not a transmission shop, and not prepared to do any transmission work other than install a replacement transmission. I sold my shop of 26 years, 3 and a half years ago, so I’m not looking for work. He asked me what to do, who can I recommend?

I told him what I felt was the truth, I can’t recommend any local shops, but I can recommend an excellent transmission supplier. I told him that GotTransmissions.com has exactly what you and your customer want, a good low mileage used foreign transmission. Now this is a foreign transmission, an Izuzu Transmission to be exact, so knowing what you are buying in terms of mileage and warranty is important.

I told him that if it was me and assuming I had no transmission knowledge, I would contact GotTransmissions.com @ 866-320-1182 and ask about a good used low mileage transmission. My opinion on the subject was that the customer can save a bunch of money on a guaranteed low mileage used foreign car transmission and perhaps some aggravation.

By and large you can save money, fulfill your needs and get a great nationwide warranty with a used foreign transmission. At least you know it has not been messed with or had a bunch of warranty issues if you buy from GotTransmissions. The truth is that every one of the transmissions they sell including used foreign transmissions are pre-tested by GotTransmissions.com for everybody’s insurance.

When I spoke with Hank the other day, he was very happy with my recommendation and his customer was feeling good about his decision to take the recommended advise. Hank told me he is sold on GotTransmissions.com and won’t even entertain another transmission replacement company.

Low mileage ‘like new’ used transmissions for sale..

If you think a low mileage used transmission is not a good idea, check it out. Got a newer car, lets say 8 years or newer? A low mileage used transmission is the hot way to go. At pennies on the dollar compared to a new or a rebuilt transmission, it is fast becoming the choice of smart consumers.

As a matter of fact, most of the quality extended car insurance companies choose low mileage used transmissions from reputable suppliers such a GotTransmissions.com, who  sell these used units all day to these companies. In many cases it is more cost effective and less problems occur using a good used transmission over a remanufactured transmission.

Basically you eliminate a lot of areas for error when you choose a used transmission. Most used transmissions with low mileage have never been worked on before, this being a good sign that it was manufactured properly from the factory. Once you locate a unit that fits the desired specifics, having it professionally installed makes for a smaller bill, but more important is the reliability factor of a trouble free, low mileage second hand transmission.

Small risk involved here, remember if you bought an extended warranty for 4 years or 60,000 miles, the insurance company has to honor the warranty for that amount of time. These guys are bean counters, they know that their warranty ‘s make more money and keep their customers very satisfied using this method of transmission replacement. Essentially it is a mutual interest of providing and receiving a quality product so all concerned parties end up in a win-win situation.

You get a terrific product at a great price, the supplier supplies a transmission they know will fill your needs and the scrap yard keeps selling the good used units to the other happy people. If you are on a budget and can’t afford a new car, even with the rebate, or you can’t get credit for a new car, then consider the world of good used low mileage transmissions.

GotTransmissions.com outperforms the competition by staying on top of every detail of the recyclable used transmission industry, which always leaves them a step ahead when it comes to providing you with the information and goods you need to have a great customer experience.

Used transmissions: Not all clunker trade-ins are created equal

Now that the House has approved rushing an additional $2 billion to prop up the financially strapped for cash for clunkers purchase program, owners of the 1991 Dodge Caravan might be thinking of trading in their older vehicle for something newer.

You might be in for a surprise when they get to the dealer.

Under the terms of the governments rebate program, a ’91 Dodge Caravan with a 3.0-liter V6 engine and three-speed automatic transmission, rated at 18 mpg, could qualify for a rebate. But the very similar ’91 Caravan with optional four-speed (TF604) transmission, rated at 19 mpg, does not.

That decision you made back in 1996 to pay $350 to get the used automatic transmission is going to cost you a few thousand dollars today. There are lots of examples like this in the minivan class, and I imagine it’s going to cause a lot of confusion when people turn in their cars.

Officially titled the Cash Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, the clunkers rebate program was launched just a week ago and lets buyers turn in an old vehicle and receive a voucher for $3,500 to $4,500 toward a new, more fuel efficient car. Cars and trucks must be 1984 models or newer and rated at 18 mpg or less to be eligible.

A government Web site listing thousands of models is the official spot to check whether a vehicle is eligible. (To check your vehicle, click here.)

The program is designed to revive weak U.S. car sales and get some old, gas-guzzling vehicles off the roads. It has proved so popular that it burned through its entire $1 billion budget in less than a week as new car buyers flocked to dealerships.

If the Senate ratifies the House measure and injects more money in the program, drivers may be surprised at what they find when they check on what they consider to be their old clunker.

The way I see it is an awful lot of people out there think that simply moving into a car that gets four MPG better than the one they trade in is going to be easy, but not that many cars qualify because 18 miles per gallon is a fairly low fuel economy.

You’re looking at a fairly old Ford Explorer with a V8 engine, a Chevy Tahoe or a Trailblazer, vehicles like that, but they need to be fairly old and meet all requirements to qualify.

Take, for example, the Buick Park Avenue, which was in production from 1991 to 1996. The car was big, luxurious and is seen by many as the quintessential American gas guzzler, but in reality the vehicle just misses the clunker programs with an MPG of 19 mpg. FYI: Mine, a 1995 Buick Road master wagon never gets less than 20 MPG on the highway.

It’s the same issue with many old American muscle cars. Often models with V8 engines qualify, while those with four-cylinder engines do not. A case in point is the Ford Mustang. Its 1990-1993 models, in particular.

It’s almost as if car shoppers are being punished for the decision they made when they bought their cars.

What appears to be good about this situation is there will be an overload of used transmissions and other recyclable parts for your clunker, especially if you can’t afford a new car or don’t qualify for credit. Good used transmissions for sale are in abundance now, make your best deal with GotTransmissions.com

Transmission Tips: How to use the Tow/Haul mode..

In Tow/Haul Mode, the shift points in your automatic transmission are changed and the throttle response is increased for smoother starts and better acceleration under full load. Tow/Haul Mode holds lower gears longer while accelerating or decelerating, and for increased engine braking control.

For all practical purposed the Tow/Haul mode is a waste of time and confusing. It is just another ‘worthless’ convenience as far as I’m concerned. The idea is to allow your vehicle to have more ‘pulling’ power while pulling a load or improve fuel mileage on the highway while on. When ‘on’, it delays the shifts so the engine can build more power before it shifts, it also makes the shift quality more aggressive, It is also easy to forget to turn off.

We have a Tow/Haul mode on our 2000 GMC Safari van. We have never used it. We don’t tow or pull anything. However my experience with it as a transmission shop owner suggests that not to many folks know how to use it properly. That is my point, not to many people use it. My experimentation and study of Tow/Haul modes is to forget you have it and leave it out of Tow/Haul mode.

Technically speaking it uses a resistor to effectively lower the amperage to the pressure control solenoid, which in turn causes a later harsher shift. I found that the switch and circuitry used in these setups cause more trouble than they are worth, and add to that the fact that problems with this mode, whether electrical or mechanical are hard to diagnose.

My advise to customers who have questions about the Tow/Haul mode switch or when to turn the overdrive switch on or off is to forget you have them, leave overdrive on all the time, don’t get on the highway and forget to pop the overdrive switch on or you will lose as much a 4 or 5 miles per gallon. Leave the Tow/Haul switch off all the time.

One point of interest is that we never found any evidence that using a Tow/Haul switch actually increased pulling power or gas mileage.

That is my advise for this confusing option. If you have the option, learn to live with it. If not, consider yourself lucky you don’t have one more item to monitor.

Transmission upgrades for Rebuilt transmissons…

The automatic transmissions coming off the assembly lines in Detroit are truly masterpieces of engineering. But engineers have been asked to program the shifting thus compromising long life for smoothness and comfort. Once a person has gone through the process of a rebuilt transmission, shift softness loses it’s appaeal.

For comfort purposes, Detroit designers have had to subtract a considerable amount of smoothness out, affecting durability. They have achieved comfort by extending the time duration of every shift. Not only does power slip away during this extended shift, but all friction surfaces receive excessive wear because they are asked to work overtime.

The stock automatic takes longer to complete each shift. During this period only a partial power condition exists because the friction elements are slipping.

This extended slipping time prevents the internal energy from being efficiently utilized. It is lost in the form of heat on the clutches and bands, due to slippage, instead of being utilized for forward motion. Continually operating a stock automatic at full throttle will burn the fluid and cause early friction element failure.

To get the proper performance and improved durability in an automatic, we must improve the way it executes every shift.

Are you willing to accept a faster shift? Most folks who are considering a rebuilt transmission, the cost will sober you up right away. In 99% of the cases the excellent performance, (which it never had from the factory) gives the customer a reason to call back and speak of the new virtues of their transmission performance and durability. This is exactly what a Trans-Go Re-Programming Kit does for you. It makes each shift faster and more efficient. As a result, durability of the transmission is immediately doubled.

The problem now becomes clear that what we need is re-programming that will precisely control the complicated chain of events that occur during every shift and do it in a far briefer span of time.

This is exactly what all shift kits are supposed to do, although Trans-Go has accomplished this better than anybody else. Probably due to standing the test of time (conceived in the ’50s) and producing kits that really work. Trans-Go upgrade kits cut slipping time by more than 70% and at the same time improve the quality of the shifting action itself.

The automatic transmission with a re-programming kit installed now shifts fast enough to take advantage of the energy from rotating mass, including the internal energy from the transmission itself. In driving this conversion at full throttle a solid shift feel can be felt when it shift

As the elapsed time of shifting is decreased, the life of the transmission friction materials and bands are increased. Installing a Re-Programming kit will at least double the life of the friction materials in the transmission. In many heavy duty applications, an upgrade kit and auxiliary cooler have made the difference between a few months service without repair and several years.

The shorter shift time allows the friction elements and gears far less time to slip during the shift for comfort purposes. The useful life of the friction elements in a transmission is directly related to the amount of slipping that is allowed to occur during shifts.

Slipping converts useful energy to heat on the surface of the clutches and bands. This heat transforms the friction material to charcoal which polishes its mating element, causing further slipping, heat and deterioration of the friction elements. We already know heat is the enemy of tyour transmission.

Are quicker shifts all that matters?

Not by a long way. We have seen what can be gained in durability and performance with quicker
shifts. Overlap is also extremely important. Overlap is a condition caused by applying a one gear before
the previous gear has been released.

Factory programming includes an excessive amount of overlap. This is done purely for smoothness. Overlap causes delayed shifts. Excessive Overlap is eliminated with Trans-Go Re-Programming. The difference is felt immediately and there are substantial increases in performance, durability and fuel economy.
The point is that you can, as I do, install an update kit as soon as you buy a new car, or install one in your current car if the transmission is healthy. You can rest assured that any transmission replacement company worth it’s weight only sells rebuilt transmission with a shift kit installed. Preferably a Trans-Go kit. Trans-Go always worked well for us at our shop and they have a great technical service group if you had any problems.
Trust me when I say GotEngines.com sells no non-upgraded transmissions.

Used transmissions: Borg Warner T-50…

Comment/Question: I just bought a hot rod with a 350 chevy and a T50 5 speed. The transmission does not shift well, especially down shifting. Can these be serviced or should I find another T50 or a different top shifter? What is your turn around if i ship it to you? Bill Gould
Answer: The T-50 is not a super duty manual transmission, however a healthy T-50 should suit your purposes well, a modified ‘beefed up” unit is nearly indestructible, but expensive. Unless you are serious about using it hard, in most cases switching the type of standard transmission can be a real hassle. The clutch may be different, the length may be different (necessitating a different drive-shaft), and the cross-member may be in another location. Either way, if I was going to do all of that work, I would just assume rebuild it to suit the purpose or go with a T-5 B/W transmission.
Does it grind upon downshift? If it grinds, it is more than likely inside the transmission. If it is sticky or hard to push into a lower gear with NO grinding, than it may be a clutch problem. I would probably drain the lube over a white piece of cardboard and look to see if any contamination comes out in the fluid. Like brass color or ferrous (magnetic) metal. These are telltale signs of an internal problem. It also cuts to the chase faster.
Next, check the clutch and replace the clutch for insurance sake.. It sounds like the clutch or part of it may be bad or out of adjustment, if the car shifts properly when the engine is off. If your clutch is worn out or not disengaging all the way, it will drag shifts and be resistant or hard to push into a lower gear, if it grinds it is inside. Buy a NEW clutch from the parts store. New ones cost about as much as a rebuilt one and are infinitely better. Brands like: LUK, Sachs, Valeo, etc are all factory original and readily available.
I don’t recommend anyone who is not a specialist to rebuild their own trans. Contrary to popular belief, standards can be more difficult to rebuild than automatics. It would be an understatement to say that rebuilding a standard transmission is a piece of cake, would you perform brain surgery on your child to save a few bucks? Transmission rebuilding is for highly trained veteran mechanics, like brain surgery is performed by trained, highly educated Doctors. In fact, it is downright insulting to a veteran transmission rebuilder to be referred to as anything less than an intelligent well trained specialist with a lot of experience.
The reason a properly rebuilt standard transmissions using genuine American made parts is not as affordable as the “cheap” units is because the after-market for standard transmissions is infiltrated with a ton of cheap Chinese made gears now, and they are complete and unadulterated crap. Designed so less than ethical company’s can compete price wise with the used units and tell you how inexpensive their rebuilt manual transmissions are.
Trust me, you will pay double price when the “cheap one” breaks right out of warranty or you break a gear and get told gears are not guaranteed.
The metal is scrap iron, the gears are not hardened properly, guaranteed gear and bearing failure, fast. So consider this, the fact is that the “cheap units” will probably powder (destroy) the input gear and cluster gear on you first ‘holeshot“, that makes them a bad deal and more expensive, and angering. Broken gear are not generally covered under warranties. Good old fashioned crafted American made gears can take much more punishment. Here is a little vibe on my experience with punishing a transmission.
I would not look into interchangeability. For the most part it is easier and cheaper to go back with original since it already fits, especially in a hot rod situation where custom mounting may have been fabricated.
Last thing is that I would get one from Brian, it will be the most cost effective way to handle the transmission swap. The T-50 is a fine unit, however if you do your own rebuild, get the American made parts.

If you decide on a good used manual transmission, GotTransmissions.com would be my choice.

Good Luck.

Used transmissions need a filter with a flush out..

A Good Question if you have got an automatic transmission: I recently had the transmission in my Chevy Impala (51,000 miles) power flushed at a local Goodyear dealer. The technician told me it was not necessary to also replace the filter since the equipment they used (Wynn’s) would also clean the existing filter. I went along with this explanation. Now, in mentioning this to my very knowledgeable mechanic, he told me I was given bad information and wasted my money since the filter would still have retained contaminants. What do you say? — A.G., e-mail

Answer: I’d agree that you received poor information from that technician. But I don’t believe you wasted your money. Just so you know, there’s no way to flush contaminants out of the filter with transmission flushing equipment. But, I’m a believer in power flushing the transmission with the proper flushing machine, especially when the old fluid is mildly discolored. That’s because the old-fashioned method of servicing the transmission fluid involves removing the transmission pan. This method only removes about one-third of the fluid in the system and the other two-thirds remains in the torque converter and transmission cooler. The best way to remove all the fluid is by flushing. END.

But, you do need piece of mind, go ahead and have the filter replaced. To do so, the transmission pan will need to be removed. This will obviously add to the bill. Is it worth it? A few more bucks having the pan lowered and inspected, and having a new filter installed is priceless. Regardless of the fluids color and condition, it is possible to have a major problem occurring that may be fixable. If the pan is not lowered and inspected, you have no visual way to prove it.

More concerning is the fact that you will experience a major transmission failure from this irresponsible action, prematurely, causing the need for one of our good used transmissions for sale, as opposed to a repair if said problem is found early in the failure process. Trust me on this, get the filter changed too, or go somewhere that will.

Used Transmissons, Transmission maintenance: When NOT to flush or service..

Before draining or flushing you should pull the dip stick and look at the fluid with a white paper towel. If it is dark, burnt smelling, and you see little flakes or speck in it, DO NOT FLUSH IT. The fluid and transmission is burnt, but the transmission just has not figured out it should die yet. It is then time to look for good used transmissions.

What is happening in these cases is that the fluid is too old or got too hot and actually became burnt. Almost like catching fire, in fact probably very close to a fire inside the transmission. By letting the fluid become burnt and damaged, all of the additives become ineffective.

One of the main additives is a detergent they put in the fluid. The detergent or cleaning agent is used because transmission fluid is not changed as often as engine oil. Therefore it becomes necessary to have plenty of detergents or cleaning agents in the automatic transmission fluid so the contaminants stay in suspension and don’t congregate in one area.

When the fluid is burnt up and dirty, by replacing the fluid with fresh fluid full of detergent and cleaners, the debris becomes dislodged and naturally finds it’s way to the control mechanism called the valve body. The other thing that happens is the new fluid with detergent can loosen the glue that holds the clutch plates and band material that holds them to their backing plates.

The goal here is to flush the trans BEFORE the fluid gets damaged. If you have the insight to keep the fluid changed at my personal fluid change specifications than the fluid will never change color or become burnt, which is why a strict maintenance schedule needs to be implemented and followed.

Extenuating circumstances call for early maintenance. Particularly if the engine overheats. The transmission is cooled by the engines radiator also, when the engine overheats, so does the transmission. If you pull a heavy load with your vehicle and add hot weather to the mix, then it becomes imperative to check the transmission fluid until the slightest hint of discolor appears. At that point you know to change the fluid in your transmission 1000 miles before the point it has a slight hint of discoloration. Thus preventing needless transmission failure.

One of your transmissions best friends is an auxiliary transmission cooler. It is very dramatic at how much longer your transmission will live, if it fails at all, when you remove 15 to 20 degrees of heat from a transmission. Probably saves needing to find a place that sells used transmissions.

If you become stuck in a spot that requires a replacement transmission, it is natural for you to do business with a company like GotTransmissions.com. It is easy to see we don’t wish anyone to have a need for a transmission for sale. This is the type of company that is more interested in customer satisfaction than making the big buck..
