Ford transmissions for sale: AODE

The Ford transmission, designated AOD-E was the first electronic version of it’s predecessor the AOD. It would take a series of articles to discuss the problems this transmission had designed into them. Designed is the Keyword here.

The AOD was redesigned with electronic controls in 1991. The transmissions are not interchangeable either, as the AOD only uses a throttle valve cable for operation. The AODE and 4R70W are controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

An awkward designed valve body, which was long and narrow often lent itself to developing a warp in it, causing a hydraulic pressure leak between the valve body and case. In a hydraulic piece of equipment, internal leaks cause major drive-ability problems and lots of transmission failures.

The cures were immediately attended to by the major transmission upgrade kit manufacturers. Yet it took a few years of research and making changes in the kits before the problems were successfully eliminated on a long term basis. Once the upgrade kits were perfected, we could then supply our customers with a reliable, properly working AODE.

The immediate effect on the way an upgraded transmission worked actually caused many customers to call and let us know that their car never ran better, even when new. Some folks came back and asked if this how it is supposed to work? Wondering why it did not perform this well when new. Some people even got better fuel mileage than before.

Needless to say, this built a lot of confidence in our customer base, which made my shop very successful. I sold my shop several years ago. The most important statement I will make in this post is that the only supplier of transmissions for sale that will fulfill the requirements you demand is GotTranmsissons.com. I can say that with confidence since on occasion my shop was so busy, when we needed to get someone on the road fast, we called GotTransmissions.com @ 866-320-1182.

If we have captured your interest, feel free to peruse the rest of our Blog. Good luck and enjoy.

Rebuilt Transmission or Transmission repairs, loss of reverse in 4L60E

The sudden loss of reverse in a 4L60E or a T-700R4 is a common problem in respect to the actual amount of internal problems these transmission have. I have been asked many times “why has my Chevy Suburban lost reverse all of a sudden and only seems to have 2 forward speeds and make a racket if I drive it” more times than I can recall. The next question was how much for a rebuilt transmission?

We all know you can’t diagnose a transmission over the phone or Internet for that matter. Even if you bring it closer to the telephone! So, in effect giving out prices before a diagnosis is made is not accurate or ethical, and it builds unreal pricing expectations.

There is a good answer and a better solution. Lets start with what goes wrong. The part we call a sun gear shell breaks the splines, literally, right out of the stamped steel shell. When that happens, the splines that connect to the reverse sun gear can no longer hold on to the sun gear, causing no reverse.

Another symptom that proves the point is that the vehicle will only have second gear and fourth gear. I suggest you stop driving it at that point and locate a transmission shop who will diagnose the problem. I definitely recommend you have it towed to the facility. Many shops tow for free with repairs.

So, getting right to the point, the transmission will have to be removed and carefully and cleanly disassembled for inspection. Here is the deal, you have a 50-50 chance that your transmission can be repaired using the updated heavy duty shell G.M designed and started to install in the 4L60E in the mid ’90s, or one of the expensive racing shells designed by the better racing transmission companies. Personally the updated factory one is what I put in my GMC truck and my wife’s Safari van.

I took the transmission out of the Safari van at my shop on a Saturday just to replace the shell so my wife would not call me at a bad time for both of us, with a transmission problem. I believe in preventative procedures, instead of emergency procedures.

Obviously some people are not so fortunate and will have other damage inside the transmission, necessitating a replacement transmission. My advise in this case is to purchase a rebuilt transmission that is fully upgraded, and that includes a redesigned sun shell.

Although the T700R4 had very few issues with sun shell breakage in comparison with it’s brother the 4L60E, make sure the company that supplies you with a remanufactured Chevy transmission which has put in a redesigned shell. Nothing like an ounce of prevention.

So how do you know if the company you choose is doing the proper upgrades? Some suggestions on ‘How to choose the right transmission shop’ can be studied in a prior post. The single most important ingredient in choosing a properly repaired or rebuilt transmission is trust,  so do your homework in respect to who to choose, as the article states.

I have had 30 plus years in the transmission industry, 26 being a shop owner. After reading the suggested posts, you will come to the same conclusion I did. When one is in the hunt for a top line rebuilt transmission, take my word from personal experience. Call the specialists at GotTransmissions.com @ 866-320-1182 and discuss the matter. Their ethics are beyond question, every transmission is delivered in a timely manner, and best of all, you will know that the remanufactured transmission you purchased is built the proper way.

With that being said, at my shop we never cut corners and did a lot of rebuilding in house. On occasion we needed a rebuilt transmission fast, perhaps they my customer was traveling or had a commercial vehicle. In these isolated case we would buy from GotTransmissions.com. Our confidence in them was built from the fact we never had an issue or problem with anything we ever purchased. They are also very friendly, yet serious about making sure you get the correct application. That is priceless.

Mazda Transmissions: Transmission Service Bulletin

Here is part of a Mazda service bulletin # 05-014/06, put out in 12/12/2006. This is a procedure I have mentioned in the past. I can’t even describe the importance of understanding and following this procedure any time you install a replacement Mazda transmission, or any replacement transmission.

It is not a matter of what brand of exchange rebuilt or used transmission being installed. It is simply a matter of cleaning the debris from the transmission cooler and cooler lines. In the vast majority of vehicles there is a cooler built into the radiator. Some vehicles come with factory auxiliary transmission cooler’s also, and some auxiliary coolers are installed later on purchased from the aftermarket. Regardless, the auxiliary cooler is inline with the transmission cooler in the radiator.

If you fail to follow this procedure, I can practically guarantee that what ever choice of replacement transmission you install, you will not be successful. It is critical to effectively clean, the debris that gets caught in the cooing coils of the transmission cooler completely clean.

Bulletin:Automatic Transmission (A/T) oil cooler/lines must be power flushed completely before an overhauled or replacement A/T is installed. One of the causes of repeat A/T failures is an internal automatic transmission fluid (ATF) restriction at the inlet side of the oil cooler. This restriction is usually caused by an accumulation of metal particles and debris (from a previous A/T failure) on the internal mesh type baffle of the oil cooler. Power flush-ing will remove the restriction by back flushing the cooler/lines followed by forward flushing. This will in turn ensure full ATF flow for the transmission when it is operating.”

The bottom line is that the installer of a rebuilt transmission has to use some sort of system to power flush the cooling system. For home mechanics there is a product, which in fact many transmission shops use, which comes in an aerosol can that hooks to the cooler line/s and flushes a cooling line cleaning agent through, thus eliminating all debris. I hope this advise is helpful to anyone who replaces a transmission.

Ford Transmissions for sale: Ford A4LD…

The early Ford transmission for sale, dubbed the C3 was modified into the A4LD four-speed by using a new case and adding an overdrive gear, which the C3 lacked. This transmission was introduced with the 1985 Bronco II and Ranger, again with four- and six-cylinder engines only. It was replaced by the 4R44E and 4R55E in 1995.

This was the first Ford transmission (automatic) to use an TCU-controlled torque converter lock-up clutch. Electronic shift control for the 3-4 shift was later added, another first, though other gears remained hydraulic.

It had it’s share of problems. Partially due to the new design and introduction of a compact sized overdrive transmission. Early units had issues with broken reverse bands, blown up overdrive sections, the overdrive planetary in particular and lockup torque converter problems galore.

As a shop owner we were there for the first ones that failed. We had to learn quickly how to effectively fix these transmissions. at first we had little or no information on these units, so we had to learn ourselves. We call self educated people autodidacts. A new term for you.

Eventually we not only figured out how to fix them, but the oldest upgrade company in the world, Transgo, developed update kits within a year of their introduction because there were so many problems with this transmission in the beginning. The update kits were updated regularly, which allowed us to produce highly reliable rebuilt A4LD transmissions.

BTW: Since this is a relativity small compact unit, we found that installing an auxiliary transmission cooler to keep the fluid from overheating gave these units as all transmissions much added life. Request synthetic transmission fluid as well.

Realistically speaking, you won’t find a lot of good used transmissions out there. Mostly because of attrition. They stopped producing them in 1994, so obviously any used unit would have age and mileage against it.

My recommendation would be to locate a highly reputable transmission supply company and buy an upgraded rebuilt transmission for sale with a quality rebuilt torque converter. As a shop owner, I had to find the best companies to deal with when I needed a rebuilt transmission fast. The only company that never let me down is GotTransmissions.com.

The reason being, is that they are a company of high ethics and refuse to sell anything except the cream of the crop. Their nationwide warranties prove it. Ford Transmissions: 5R55E- no reverse..

Question: have a 2001 ford explore it will not go back in reverse there was a bang that came from the rear before it happened at times it will go into gear but the problem i know is in the transmission

Answer: You most likely have a 5R55E Ford transmission which was the first 5-speed automatic transmission to be employed by an American automaker. The 5R55E featured more accurate computer controls (to accommodate the additional forward gear) and introduced adaptive shift control.

In this case I would agree that you have a transmission problem. If I were to guess, and this is a guess, because as I have discussed in the past, it is impossible to diagnose a transmission over the phone or Internet.

Without being over detailed, more than likely the reverse band has broken or the reverse servo is damaged. I say this since you heard a “bang”.

It would be wise to take the vehicle to reputable transmission shop for diagnosis. By lowering the transmission pan for an inspection by a trained specialist one can determine if the servo is broken. The servo is the hydraulic apply mechanism and can be replaced in the vehicle.  BYW, if you have luck on your side, have the filter changed and insist in synthetic automatic transmission fluid.

Chances are that your reverse band broke, which would require transmission removal and dis-assembly. In a few isolated cases the band can be changed and the transmission resealed and put back in your van. Generally speaking, in most cases the transmission is worn throughout the entire unit and the band was the first thing to go bad.

My suggestion is to locate a low mileage good used  transmission or a high quality rebuilt transmission if the unit needs to be replaced.

If you decide on a rebuilt transmission, the better supply companies put an upgrade kit in the valve body of the transmission, which in essence is the brain. This upgrade kit specifically addresses the pressure control issues that causes the broken band, along with a slew of other issues as well.

With that being said my suggestion would be to call the gentlemen at GotTransmissions.com (866-320-1182) and discuss with them your alternatives. My 30 plus years in the transmission business has exposed me to every possible transmission company in the USA, it seems. The one company that has always stood alone from the rest is GotTransmissions.com. They are committed to providing the most up to date transmissions and good used transmissions with low mileage.

What ever is diagnosed as your problem, remember that nothing can replace the value in purchasing a reliable product from a well established company. Although GotTransmissions.com is the most affordable company I have ever done business with, it is not the price that really draws me to them, it is the quality, and that is the most important paradigm. Buy a top quality product and pay for it once.

Transmissions for sale: Chrysler 45RFE ..

When looking for a transmission for sale, particularly the 45RFE, which is a Chrysler automatic transmission. The name RFE is essentially an acronym for its Rear wheel drive Full Electronic control system.

The 45RFE is an automatic transmission from DaimlerChrysler.

Introduced in the WJ Grand Cherokee in 1999, it is mentionable for having 3 planetary gear sets instead of the two normally used in a 4-speed  automatic overdrive transmissions. This gives it in theory, six speeds, perhaps it would have been the first six-speed transmission ever produced in volume.

The factory decided to program the TCU  to only use five of these ratios. Four are used for upshifts, with a different second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratios are used, Chrysler decided to call it a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission.

The 45RFE is produced at the Indiana Transmission plant in Kokomo, Indiana. It is normally bolted to the 4.7L V-8 Chrysler engine.

The 45RFE later became the 5-speed 545RFE.

In design this is a heavy duty transmission, that with the correct updates becomes practically bulletproof. Essentially the internal components are up to nearly any task. However, the programming  of the valve body from the factory leaves much to be desired.

Valve body programming problems and solenoid pack assembly’s have been the Achilles heal of this transmission. We hear many stories of unhappy people who have experienced multiple problems and many failures with this transmission as it comes out of the factory.

Needless to say a lot of research and development time has been put into upgrading the weak spots, which turns this into a very reliable transmission capable of exceeding expectations. Reprogramming the valve body is the area that receives the most attention in upgrades when a 45RFE is rebuilt.

The issue at hand is how do you know what company that has Chrysler transmissions for sale, which offers the upgraded units. Realistically speaking there is no way to tell from the outside of the transmission. So in essence one has to do the research necessary in order to buy a transmission for sale that has been upgraded during a rebuild. The company’s ethics play a big part here.

The best bet is having the proper knowledge of what to ask for when determining what company to use.  My suggestion is simple and quick. Since I have already done the research for you.The most reputable company in the field is GotTransmissions.com. I am not saying that there are not any other reputable supply company;’s out there. All I’m saying is that from my research and Benjamin Frankining (asking tons of questions) company’s to death, I have no doubt that you will be very happy with the price. more important, you will buy a transmission for sale that has been rebuilt properly. Just ask about their extended warranties.

A warranty is a great metric to use when determining the confidence a company has in their products. Call the specialists at GotEngines.com @ 866-320-1182 for solid advise. I guarantee it.Interested in some self education? Read more of our GotTransmissions.com blog. Subscriptions are free.

Transmissions for sale: Toyota A245E Automatic Transaxle

The A245E produced from 1993-2007 is a Corolla automatic transaxle that was based on the A240E, and the following changes were made to reduce its size and weight, and to further improve the shift feel, Fuel efficiency and dynamic performance. One of the more popular transmissions for sale due to it’s massive useage.

The A245E is a cleaner shifting transnaxle than it’s predessesor. Speaking of transaxles, technically speaking, a transaxle insinuates a transmission and differential assembly in one housing. The majority of transaxles are front wheel drive. We term this a transverse mounted engine and transmission. Transverse meaning the engine and transmission are mounted east to west in reference to the north south axis of the vehicle.

As opposed to longitudinal mounted transmissions wich run north to south parralell to the axis of the vehicle, hence rear wheel drive. Which uses a driveshaft to connect the transmission to the rear differential.

Realistically speaking this is one of the finest Toyota transmissions made. The only problems found with this unit are in the axle section. In the case of a Toyota transaxle, although the transmission and axle are in the same case, they are in separate compartments. The transmission side holds the automatic transmission fluid and the differential side uses differential fluid. This is opposed to most transaxles where the transmission fluid lubricates both the transmission portion and the differential portion.

That being said, the only problem we have experienced with this unit is that the differential section can develop an leak (of differential fluid) independently from the transmission section. Since most people, even lubrication specialists don’t know this, it is common to ignore checking the differential fluid. Hence, when the differential develops a slow drip, it may go unnoticed until the fluid runs out of the differential. Which cause a major failure to the transmission and an abrupt halt accompanied by  a terrible noise.

My point is to make sure you advise the person servicing up your car to check the differential portion of the transmission to make sure it is full. As a matter of interest, at my shop, when we service a Toyota transmission or rebuild a Toyota transmission, we would paint the differential fill plug yellow. Then we would show it to the customer while the car was on a lift. This way the customer can advise the service technician where to check the differential fluid upon transmission maintenance.

Chevy transmissions – G.M. 4L80-E for sale

The workhorse of the Chevy transmission line was the 4L80-E, manufactured from l991 to 2005. Essentially a T400 with an overdrive section in front, it shares many internal components with a T-400 transmission. The biggest differences being the case, in order to house the overdrive section, the O.D. section and the valve body.

Starting with one of the most successful and popular Chevy transmissions ever, the T400 as a base, this is an incredibly durable transmission capable of unusual tasks. Being a fully computerized transmission, making use of an onboard computer and many sensors to send the proper signals to the computer which then tells the transmission what to do.

Used in the heavy duty pickup trucks and commercial vehicles G.M. produced, many Chevy trucks were purchased because they had a superior transmission at the time to the other auto and truck manufacturers. In regard to it’s design, there were some changes made to upgrade the unit from the factory, but in reality any 4L80-E transmission can use a quality upgrade kit, especially upon rebuild.

I think that by not automatically installing an upgrade kit when a 4L80-E is rebuilt is doing a disservice to your customer and to your transmission shop if you have an unhappy customer. My advise is to ask a lot of questions concerning what upgrades and grade of parts are used during the process. In the end the warranty tells the story. At my transmission shop, we gave 5 year 100,000 mile nationwide warranty’s. Thus building confidence.

We wanted to prove to our customers we were serious about our transmissions. I sold my shop three and a half years ago. It was not until I came across GotTransmissions.com that I felt comfortable with a supplier of transmissions. With total confidence I can recommend reading more of our blog or calling and talking to the specialists at GotTransmissions.com for advise you can easily digest. Educating our customers is our primary goal when it ces to making a wise choice in purchasing a rebuilt transmission.

Transmissions For Sale..

Most of the time when it come down to purchasing a transmission for sale, the consumer is at a loss as to what to ask for. In this case, the benefits of doing business with a time tested transmission suppler are priceless.

In fact, transmissions rarely warn you if there is a problem unless it is obvious. Some folks even ignore the warning signals entirely, hoping the problem will go away. This type of thinking pattern generally is the most expensive avenue to take, considering most mechanical or electrical problems don’t cure themselves.

One of my pet peeves is exactly what I just said in the above paragraph. Drivers ignore warning signs, don’t have a solid maintenance plan in place for their transmission and can’t figure out why they all of a sudden need a transmission for sale. Then they transfer or radiate their anger to the repair shop they chose.

Transmission repair or rebuilding shops are actually on your side. Transmission shops have to make money, how else can one stay in business? That does not mean the shop has to charge too much. The goal of any transmission shop should be to educate the consumer in terms they understand, why a particular replacement transmission suggestion is in your best interest.

The choices are clear, transmissions, remanufactured transmissions or reconditioned transmissions, which by the way of their respective definitions are supposed to be the same. Used transmissions are a very popular choice with the economy in disarray. Although the act of buying a used transmission for sale requires research in terms of purchasing a low mileage unit with plenty of life left in it, is unclear to some people.

One way to find a transmission replacement supply company of credibility is to ask some friends, or call the Better Business Bureau. The best way I have found is to arm yourself with some knowledge on the subject. For those of you who enjoy reading up on a subject, may I suggest reading more of our GotTransmissions.com Blog. For the folks who would rather talk to a live person, call 866-320-1182 and talk to one of the transmission specialists at GotTransmissions.com.

Either way, you will be happy with the advise and service. Remember that it is also in the suppliers best interest to give you the best guidance in terms of transmissions for sale. Which is why GotTransmissions.com is the leader in replacement transmissions.

Onboard transmission controllers–TCM for sale.

Automotive onboard computers, do much more than control the transmission and motor functions. Known as the TCU, transmission control unit-module, in most vehicles the transmission function is the main focus for the TCU. In the early days of automotive computerization, the engine was literally all the on board computer duties included, engine functions.

Modern cars have sophisticated computer systems, some cars even have more than one on-boad computer, in that case their may be a computer to keep an eye on other functions. Ninety nine percent (99%) of them don’t have a Transmission Check Lite. Based on that, the transmission will turn the Check Engine light on.

As I have preached in the past, regardless of what type of problem your car may exhibit, a scan tool must be hooked up to the DLC to determine what the problem is. Other than a good old fashioned visual inspection, in essence, you are spitting into the wind by approaching an automotive problem, or transmission problem in particular without a scan tool in hand.

Unless the car was so old that computerization was not an issue, the first thing I laid my hands on when going to diagnose a customers car was my trusty Snap On scanner, or “Red Cube”.

FYI: For example, every activity the transmission performs on modern cars and trucks is a combination of input signals, easily understood by the TCM to perform the appropriate shift/function at the correct time.

Some of the more sophisticated cars use multiple on-board computers to handle many operations, including taking input signals from wheel sensors so the suspension compensates for bumps and turns in the road for your comfort and safety.

We can see how much computerization has improved the overall function of cars and trucks. Surprisingly, even the giant semi trucks we see on the highway are highly computerized.

With that in mind what is the best avenue to take when it has been determined you need an Transmission Control Unit?  I’m not a fan of buying a computer or TCM from the dealer. Most of the time a computer from the dealer cost an arm and a leg, plus, since it is new, it is nor programmed yet. In effect we can say it is stupid. what I mean is that in most cases the computer you purchase from the dealer for an outrageous price also needs to be programmed. That’s right, another $75 to $100, or what ever the fee is to program the ignorant computer you just payed to much for and were not told about programming it.

People take unprogrammed computers home unknowingly, and install them only to find out that you need to take the computer back to the dealer  and pay for the programming. Oh, they need the car too, and that is a tow bill you can add to the total price. Along with the irritation and frustration.

As a shop owner we made a bunch of customers glow with happiness. We knew that our transmission supplier would sell us a programmed computer for about $100. Right out of a car that has been identified with the vehicle identification number VIN, to have the exact same transmission functions as your car.

The really nice part of all of this is that the warranty is usually one year on a low mileage used TCU, which may be longer than the dealers warranty, and it bolts in, making the car useable again, without towing it to the dealer to get it programmed.

Sounds good eh? Keep this information in mind when you need an transmission repair or transmission replacement. We talk about diagnostics all the time on our GotTransmissions.com Blog, since diagnosis is the most important test your mechanic will perform, much like a doctor will diagnose you before he decides you need brain surgery.

Cars and humans, it is true that there is a common bond between the two. Both pieces of equipment have many separate systems that require strict diagnostic procedures before work is started. Both have to have all systems operating properly to make the entire system work correctly in whole.

Before you buy any old computer, give a call to the transmission supplier who outperforms them all, @ 866-320-1182. Satisfaction guaranteed.
