The Ford Transmission called The A4LD has been used since 1985. These transmissions was introduced with the 1985 Bronco II and Ranger, again with four- and six-cylinder engines only. The Explorer started to use it in 1990. It was replaced by the 4R44E and 4R55E in 1995.
The A4LD transmission was not exactly a smashing success. As with many new features, which was simply making a 4 speed overdrive transmission out of a mediocre three speed automatic transmission called the C-3 was basically a problem filled transmission which used the public as the guinea pig.
