Getting down to brass tacks, we find that the CVT transmission by Saturn uses a specially blended synthetic lubricant only for their CVT. This is not one of those situations where the factory does not want you using aftermarket brands of ATF [automatic transmission fluid] for profit. It is actually the opposite, they know that there really is nothing available in the aftermarket that meets their precise specs.
Trying to save money or time substituting the factory recommended ATF with a substitute the counter person says ”this is the exact same thing, and it costs less” is a fast way to be in line for a replacement transmission.
Further more, CVT ATF is another specialty blended fluid. Don’t get me wrong, most of the cars made now have to have factory original fluids used in the transmission. It’s that simple. The parts store has Mobil 1 synthetic ATF for some brands of cars, but certain fluids like Saturn, Kia and Honda, to mention just a few are best purchased from the dealer.
Believe me that is the least expensive way to go, even if you pay the labor for a transmission maintenance and the shop uses your fluid. Chances are they will be grateful that they did not have to run to the dealer.
